Our school counselors devote their time to working with students, parents, and teachers to make Heritage Middle School an enjoyable and safe place to learn. Guidance is concerned with all the services available to students to help them achieve academic success in school, better understand their strengths and limitations, identify their interests and aid them in planning for and attaining realistic goals.

Guidance services for each student are achieved through:
  • Individual counseling
  • Group guidance
  • Group counseling
  • Testing
  • Informational services related to vocations, educational opportunities and personal-social aspects of living
  • Assistance to teachers and staff
  • Work with community groups
  • Parent conferences

The counseling service is the heart of the guidance program. It is the service through which all other guidance activities and services are brought together for the benefit of the individual student. The purpose of the counseling service is to assist students in understanding themselves and in making choices that are individually satisfying and socially effective.

Lake County Youth Led Prevention

We are very excited to be partnering with Crossroads staff members to bring the LCYLP program to Heritage Middle School this year. This year we have 16 students involved, and they went through a full day of Crossroads Youth Leadership Training in October. The training was meant to help them develop the necessary skills to become allies and role models here at Heritage and in the community. The 7th and 8th grade members of our group were then able to participate in Camp Burton where they reinforced what they learned through the Youth Leadership Training and allowed Heritage students to have the opportunity to meet and collaborate with students who are involved in the Lake County Youth Led Prevention Groups at other area schools. The students will have the opportunity to work together to create a goal and action plan in collaboration with the adult leaders from Crossroads and Heritage in order to promote positive culture change. The major focus of this group is to encourage positive, healthy choices and kindness within our students and the Heritage Middle School community.
